Product Description

A circa 1715 oil on velum miniature portrait, depicting the Jacobite King in exile, James Francis Edward Stuart, ‘The Old Pretender’ to the throne of England and Scotland.

Dating from the 1st quarter of the 18th Century, the portrait shows a young man in armour, wearing the blue Order of the Garter sash. A draped red curtain comprises one half of the painting, whilst atmospheric skies make up the other.

Likely painted after the Jacobite uprising of 1715, the portrait takes its composition from a full-length painting in the Museo San Carlos in Mexico City. Little is known of that portrait, though it was procured by Luis Ortiz Macedo, an important Mexican government official, who directed the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature from 1972-1974.

The painting is in good condition, having been mounted and glazed in a 18th century turned wood frame.
