This portrait miniature of Joseph Lister is based on the larger painting in the Hunterian Museum by Walter William Ouless (1848-1933)

Lord Joseph Lister was a pioneer of antiseptic surgery, who whilst working at the Glasgow Royal infirmary, popularised the use of Carbolic acid. Widely regarded as “the father of modern surgery”, he promoted the need for sterility at a time, when because of the death-rate from surgery, there was a growing wish to abolition the practice altogether.
