Product Description

Artist: Henry James Gibbins (1803-1877)
Title: Herne Bay, Kent
Medium: Watercolour on Card
Date:

This competent study of Herne Bay by Henry James Gibbins was exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1872.

It shows Herne Bay from the farmland around Hawthorn. The iconic clocktower can be seen in the distance, as can the 18th century Herne Windmill. The addition of a sleeping farmhand in the foreground is a peculiar touch, giving a humorous aspect to what would otherwise have been a regular topographical study.

Little is known of the artistic career of Henry James Gibbins, though he seems to have taken to painting late in life, possibly after retiring from his numerous business interests. His watercolours, dating from 1860 to early 1870, suggest that he spent most of this period travelling across the Rhineland, painting scenes in France, Germany and Switzerland.

He seems to have taken this hobby seriously and though nearing 70, his only recorded exhibitions were at the Royal Academy in 1871 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1872.
