Product Description

The watercolour shows an idyllic bend of the river exe, painted around sunset, with two anglers at the river bank.

Little is known of William Williams of Plymouth (1808-1895), though he seems to have been adept in both oil and watercolour. His larger oils, mainly of picturesque scenes around south Devon, find many admirers at auction. His watercolours seem to be studies, painted swiftly to capture the character of time and place. They therefore achieve a spontaneity, often lost in his larger more closely-painted oils.

The gouache to convey the light passing through the trees is particularly well observed, as are the reflections in the river and the reddening sky. A larger painting dated to 1877 and showing a similar scene, appeared at Bonhams in 2016. Though no location was given for that example, it is very likely that it shows the River Exe, just before it widens at Topsham.

The condition of the watercolour is very good. It bears the signature “WWilliams|Plymouth” in the bottom right corner. It has been mounted and glazed in substantial gilt frame. The frame, quite a lot earlier than the painting, is showing the effects of age.
