Product Description

A fine early copper plate and hand coloured engraving of ‘The South Prospect of Bridgnorth, in the County of Salop’, by the renowned engravers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, and dated 1732.

The engraving shows a panoramic scene of the small town in a wide countryside setting, with the stone bridge over the Severn river. You can also the leaning ruins of Bridgnorth Castle. The main points of interest have been numbered on the engraving, with an explanatory table on the bottom margin. The legend at the bottom also explains that ‘Brugge’, ‘Brugge – North’, (in latin Brugia) were the ancient names of Bridgnorth and that it was founded by the widow of Ethelred, King of Mercia, in 675. It continues, with its history and makeup of the town, administration, members of Parliament. The picture is dated 1732 and has the names S. & N. Buck as artist and engraver. Samuel and Nathaniel Buck (1696 – 1779) are amongst the most famous of British engravers
Bridgnorth is a town in Shropshire (also referred to as Salop), England. The Severn Valley splits it into a High Town and Low Town, the upper town on the right bank and the lower on the left bank of the River Severn.

This must be a rare print as we can only find another example in the Government Art Collection. The print has been mounted, framed and glazed in a mid 20th frame, which is in good condition, apart from a small chip to the top left corner. The engraving itself retains nice fresh colours. There are fold creases and the paper has become brittle along the edges, but the mount mostly hides it from view.
