Product Description

An extremely rare hand-coloured mezzotint entitled “The Bread and Butter Manufactory or the Humor of Bagnigge Wells”, printed for Carrington Bowles in 1772.

The print depicts a social gathering in the long hall of Bagnigge Wells tea room. The guests are dressed in the macaroni style, with a dandy giving an elaborate introduction to a fashionable lady. A miniscule waiter serves the guests from a enormous teapot and tray.

No hand-coloured example of this mezzotint can be found. An uncoloured version can be seen in the collection of the British Museum.

The bottom of the print bears the following details: “Printed for Carrington Bowles, Map & Printseller, no. 69 in St. Pauls Church Yard, London. Publish’d as the Act directs, 15th Jan. 1772.”

The condition of the mezzotint is reasonable, though it shows remnants of old moth damage.
