Product Description

A very fine original 1837 lithograph of the Giralda minaret tower in Sevilla.

The picture is by the famous Georgian and Victorian artist David Roberts RA (1796 - 1864).It shows the Moorish Minaret in Sevilla, called La Giralda, that was subsequently turned into part of the Christian Cathedral. It also shows the steet scene around it with the shop fronts. It is only very slightly coloured with very feint tones and appears monochrome until closely checked. The original painting is in the Royal Collection.

Roberts was born in Scotland and became a painter of theatre sets, later moving down to London in 1822. Upon the advice of J.M.W. Turner, he became a professional artist and travelled to Spain and Tangiers in 1832 and in 1838-39, he toured the Middle East. On his return from Spain in 1833, he exhibited his sketches which became incredible paintings. They were reproduced as a set of lithographs in 1837, titled Picturesque Sketches in Spain.

The condition is very good and is sympathetically framed and glazed.
