1902 Edward VII Coronation by Byam Shaw Portrait 2 Archbishops


A very rare and fine lithograph print of the Archbishop William Dalrymple Maclagan and the Archbishop of Westminster Herbert Vaughan, both assisting the Archbishop of Canterbury Frederick Temple, when he officiated at the 1902 Coronation service of King Edward VII.

The picture is by the renowned artist Byam Shaw, better known for his illustrations for books during the Art Nouveau period. The taller of the two is the Archbishop of York. Both are dressed in matching regalia and have been wonderfully captured in the sketch by Byam Shaw. The picture is quite large and has been produce by McCorquodale & Co. Ltd, of London S.W.. We can find no other example f this image, either in collections or for sale. The print has been tastefully mounted, framed and glazed. It is one of 5 different pictures of the Coronation that we have listed for sale.

John Byam Liston Shaw (1872-1919), better known as Byam Shaw, was a British painter, illustrator, designer and teacher. Throughout his career Byam Shaw worked competently in a wide variety of media including oils, watercolour, pastels, pen and ink and deployed techniques such as dyeing and gilding. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and took many of his subjects from the poems of Rossetti. He exhibited frequently at Dowdeswell's gallery in New Bond Street, where he had at least five solo exhibitions between 1896 and 1916.

William Dalrymple Maclagan (1826-1910) was Archbishop of York from 1891 to 1908. In 1902 he crowned Alexandra of Denmark, wife of Edward VII, as Queen of the United Kingdom.

Herbert Alfred Henry Vaughan (1832-1903) was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Westminster from 1892 until his death and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1893. He founded the Catholic Truth Society and St. Bede's College, Manchester. As Archbishop of Westminster, he led the capital campaign and construction of Westminster Cathedral.
