Product Description

A beautiful and desirable early 20th century coloured lithograph of ‘Bielovucic Traverse les Alpes sur monoplane. Moteur Gnome (Bielovucic Crossing the Alps in a monoplane. Gnome Engine).

It shows the plane flying over the Alps mountain range, with a vignette portrait of the pilot Juan Bielovucic. It is signed M.CAMPION. It is also marked M. CAMPION – BOIS COLOMBES – COPYRIGHT 1913. The picture is in near mint condition, without any foxing and has been recently mounted, framed and glazed. It is one of a dozen images that we have recently bought and are being listed on this site.

Nothing seems to be available on the life of the artist M. Campion. We know that he worked for Ernest Montaut (1878–1909) and then his wife Marguerite Montaut (1883-1936) at the Montaut-Mabileau Studio, producing advertising poster artwork. Ernest is credited with the invention of various artistic techniques, such as speed lines and distorting perspective by foreshortening to create the impression of speed. These techniques are still in use, today. Montaut's printmaking used the Pochoir process, in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists. This caused a significant variation of colours in the finished prints, making them individually unique.

Juan Bielovucic (1889 – 1949) was a Peruvian aviator of Croatian and French descent who set several speed and altitude aviation records in 1910–13. He was also the first person to complete a successful powered aircraft crossing of the Alps in 1913. He established the first aviation school in South America in Lima, Peru. Bielovucic became a colonel of the Peruvian Aviation Corps (PAC) in 1911, joined the Service Aéronautique of the French Army as a volunteer in 1914 and earned the Legion of Honour for his service in World War I. He was also active with the French Resistance during World War II. In Croatia, he is regarded as the first Croatian aviator.
