c1876 Large Engraving Death of Nelson after Macklise by Sharpe


An impressive c1876 large hand coloured engraving of The Death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 by Charles W. Sharpe and based on the painting by Daniel Macklise from 1864.

The image depicts the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson. The image shows the fatally wounded Nelson on the deck of HMS Victory in the arms of Captain Hardy and surrounded by members of the crew. This engraving is an example of the idealisation of Nelson’s heroic death after the victorious battle and is an example of the popularity of the subject for artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nelson remains today one of the most celebrated figures in British history. The print has been mounted and glazed and set in a quality wooden frame. Please note this is a large print.
