c1925 Art Deco Silhouette Picture by Kay Nielsen

A finely made Art Nouveau to Art Deco cut out and applied silhouette picture of a reclining lady, on a chaise longue, with a Tiffany style lamp on a little side table.

The composition is predominantly black, with applied printed cloth pieces to provide the colour to the clothing. The background is an ivory piece of card. The picture is signed in pencil Kay, which indicates that this was probably an informal picture given as a present. The writing style matches his autograph. Condition is extremely good.

Kay Rasmus Nielsen (1886 - 1957) was a Danish illustrator who was popular in the early 20th century, the "golden age of illustration" which lasted from when Daniel Vierge and other pioneers developed printing technology to the point that drawings and paintings could be reproduced with reasonable facility. He joined the ranks of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac in enjoying the success of the gift books of the early 20th century. Nielsen is also known for his collaborations with Disney for whom he contributed many story sketches and illustrations.
