Product Description

A very rare hand-coloured aquatint, entitled ‘Grand Stand at Goodwood (Coming in for the Gold Cup 1838).

After the original painting of John Frederick Herring, the print was engraved by Charles Hunt and published on January 1st 1839 by John Moore at his ‘Wholesale Picture Frame and Looking Glass Manufactory’ in Chichester.

The print depicts an exciting finish in front of the Grand Stand at Goodwood. A large crowd of spectators can be seen standing in the foreground; a race official on horseback keeps a watchful eye over the outcome of the race.

The print has been ‘Dedicated by Special Permission to the Jockey Club by their Obedient Servant John Moore.’ Additionally it records the order in which the jockeys placed: “1. Harkaway 2. Adriane 3. Dormouse 4. Mus 5. Catus 6. D’Egville 7. Prestongee Bomangee 8. Warwickshire.”

The condition of the print is excellent, having been nicely framed and glazed.
