Product Description

A rare Napoleonic era print, entitled "The Bone of Contention or the English Bull Dog and the Corsican Monkey" drawn by Charles Williams and printed by S.W. Fores in 1803.

The print shows a simian version of Napoleon Bonaparte cursing the bulldog that has taken off with a bone, entitled Malta. In return the bull dog urinates in the British channel over his plans for invading England.

In colour scheme, the print resembles the example held by the Metropolitan Museum of New York, where the scabbard is the same orange as the cuffs.

The bottom left corner of the print bears the publishing details for S.W. Fores of Piccadilly and a printing date for June 14th 1803. The opposite corner reads, "Folios of caricatures lent (sic) out for the evening."

The condition of the print is very good, having been mounted in a Hogarth-style frame.
