Product Description

A hand-coloured Japanese woodblock print, bearing the seal of the painter Okuhara Seiko and dating from the late Meiji Period.

Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913) was a Japanese painter of the Meiji Period. The daughter of a Samurai, she lead an unconventional life and became a notable literati and exponent of the Kano School. Early in her career, she renounced the name of Setsuko and replaced it with Seiko, a name that implied no specific gender.

On laid paper, the print shows a snipe foraging in the marshes. Areas have been heightened with body colour.

The condition of the print is good, with the colours having retained their vibrancy.

Size: 25 x 24cm
