Product Description

A large and rare uncoloured lithograph, depicting HMS ‘Fairy’ and ‘Harpy’ engaging the French frigate ‘La Pallas’ off St. Malo on the 6th February 1800.

After the original by William Anderson, the engraving has been taken by Francis Chesham and published by Charles Richards on the 1st of January 1818.

The inscription reads: ‘A representation of His Majesty's Sloops FAIRY of 16 guns, Joshua Sidney Horton, Esq. Commander, and HARPY of 18 guns, Henry Bazely Esq. Commander, engaging the French National Frigate LA PALLAS mounting 44 guns, and 400 men; off St. Maloes, 6th Feby. 1800.’

Other examples of the lithograph can be found in the National Maritime Museum of Greenwich and in the Mariner’s Museum in Virginia.

The condition of the print is good, having been mounted and glazed in a period Hogarth frame. A faint fold down its centre suggests that it was taken from a newspaper or periodical of the period.
