Product Description

Artist: Rene Magritte (1898-1967)
Title: ‘Homme au Chapeau Melon’ (Man with Bowler Hat)
Medium: Etching on Japan Paper
Date: 1967-68

This unusual etching throws to mind Magritte’s more famous paintings, where a man wearing a bowler hat has his face obscured by an unrelated object. In his “Son of Man” (1946), it is an apple; whilst in “The Man with the Bowler Hat”, the face is hidden behind a white dove.

Although completed under Magritte's ultimate supervision, the artist would die before these etchings were published by Ateliers Georges Visat (Paris) in 1968. The signature is therefore a facsimile, made with the blessing of Georgette Magritte, wife of the artist.

Despite the high number, the etching is vivid and nicely inked. The condition is generally very good, though the paper has discoloured slightly.

Inscriptions: ‘Atelier René Magritte’ (blind-stamp)
Number: ‘136/150’
Dimensions: 37 x 32 cm (14½ x 12 ½“)
