Product Description

Artist: Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827)
Title: “The Rivals”
Medium: Hand Coloured Etching
Date: 1812

Published at No. 1 James Street Adelphi on July 14th 1812 (the date altered from a previous run of 1807), the print is a reference to Brinsley Sheridan’s play ‘The Rivals.’

The scene shows a drawing room, where two women and two men compete for the affections of the same member of the opposite sex. An older man, with eyes for the younger lady at the pianoforte, is dressed in a naval uniform and scowls at his younger rival in an army uniform as he courts the same lady. Meanwhile an older woman seated, scowls at her younger rival, who is returning the affections of her younger suitor. On the floor by her feet is a pamphlet entitled 'Triumph of Temper.

Instead of leaving the younger couple to get along, the older rivals fixate on their younger targets, getting more and more frustrated by their rejection, whilst completely ignoring the more appropriate partners of a similar age.

It is interesting to note that the colour palate, with the red-orange jacket and pink drapery, best compares to an 1807 etching in the Royal Collection Trust. Perhaps suggesting that the etching was finished in 1807 and altered five years later for republishing.

The condition of the etching is good, the colours are unfaded, with only minor foxing. Held in a period Hogarth frame.
