1902 Large Gesso Bust Statues of Edward VII & Queen Alexandra

An impressive larger than life pair of bust portrait statues of King Edward VII and his consort Queen Alexandra, which are dated 1902.

The busts are made of Gesso/plaster and have the maker’s details on the back, with the signature of the sculptor. The maker is Giuseppe Baldacci and the address is 41 Hatton Wall, EC. The signature is that of F. Coomano Sculpt. The bust of the King is wearing a military uniform and a cloak. The Queen has a crown on her head also wears a cloak over her dress. Their dress implies that the statues commemorate the Coronation in 1901. Condition is very good, with minor scratches. There is a small casting flaw hole on the pedestal base of Edward VII, but could easily be covered over.

The business originally belonged to Louis or Luigi Brugiotti (c.1818-1888), a figure maker of 4 Leather Lane. From 1872 the business generally traded as Luigi Brugiotti, rather than Louis. His name is recorded alternatively as Brogiotti, Baugiotti, Brugotte and Bugiotti. In 1885 he was succeeded in the business by Giuseppe Baldacci, another Italian born plaster figure maker, who lived in America for some years. He died age 69 in Islington. The company, however kept his name. the company produced works in plaster: busts, medical casts and decorative work. The medical casts were used for teaching purposes at Great Ormond St hospital in the 1870s and 1880s. The founder of Great Ormond, Dr Charles West used the plaster casts of body parts to illustrate medical conditions. The surviving casts now form part of UCL Art Museums & Collections (The Body in Pieces: Fragments from the UCL Great Ormond Street Hospital Collection).
