Product Description

A stunningly late 18th century, early 19th century carved marble bust of Michelangelo's David.

The statue has been carved out of white marble (probably Carrara) and it has taken on an ivory patina of age. The underside, however, is white and shows the chisel marks of the sculptor. Condition is good except for a couple a nicks on the chest and arm from rough treatment, something that could be masked by a restorer.

The quality of the sculpture is superb and it is a very good representation of the head and upper torso of Michelangelo's most famous sculpture, considered by many the be the finest statue in the World. It was most likely acquired by an aristocrat during his 'Grand Tour' travels. These became popular as a rite of passage for young men of means and were supposed to improve their education, by exposing them to the cultural legacy of Classical Antiquity and the Renaissance. These trips could last months and sometimes years. Visits to Rome, Venice and other Italian cities formed an integral part of the voyage and it was normal (depending on your budget) to send back objects from the places visited.

The original statue of David was carved by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. It was commissioned to go in Florence Cathedral, with the condition of it being of a religious subject. Nobody was prepared for the final product and it was considered quite revolutionary and too good to go in the Cathedral. It was finally moved from the Piazza della Signoria to its present location in the Galleria dell' Accademia, in Florence. The original statue measures some 425cm.
