c1920 French Brass Trophy of Goalkeeper by Sculptor G Eichhorn

£2,800.00

A very nicely crafted c1920 French Silverplated brass trophy cup that has been modelled on a leaping goalkeeper catching the ball, as made be the renowned French sculptor Gustav Eichhorn, who was famous for his imaginative car mascots.
The cup is made of brass which was once silverplated, although the remnants of silver remain only on the underside of the base. The figure shows, in its design, the similarity with car mascots. The goalkeeper is arching his back with arms outstretched as if taking flight. He is wearing a flat cap and holding a large football with the top cut off, forming the bowl of the cup. The base is signed G. Eichhorn, by the feet. On the underside is stamped 12, which may be the example number.
Gustav Eichhorn, despite his German name, was French and famous in the 1920s. His work fetches high prices, but very little information is found about him. An example of a small car mascot of a ‘Woman with Butterfly Wings’ sold at Bonhams for 3800 US Dollars in 2007.
