Large Victorian Parian Figure of a Reclining Venus

Product Description

An impressively large parian ware statue, depicting a reclined Hellenic figure, dating from the second half of the 19th century.

Possibly a depiction of Venus, the figurine shows an elegant female holding a scallop shell in her right hand. She is staring downwards, pensively, from her rocky base.

Though the piece is unmarked, the style is like the works of Kerr & Binns, the two Irishmen who revolutionised the Chamberlain Porcelain Works, in Worcester during the 1850s.

The condition of the figure is good, though the right hand, including the scallop shell has suffered some damage. A firing flaw around the chin is also visible.
