Product Description

An attractive hand-coloured traveller’s map, charting the road from London to Poole, from John Ogilby’s Britannia Atlas of 1675.

John Ogilby (1600-1676) was a Scottish translator, entrepreneur and cartographer, best known for his publishing of the first British road atlas. He would lead a life of varied interests; opening a dance school in his early years to translating classical texts later in his life. After the 1666 Fire of London, he would set up a printing press in Whitefriars, from where he would publish his Britannia atlas just 9 years later.

The map differs from conventional maps, in that it focuses on the clearest route from one place to another. This type of map would become popular in the latter half of the 17th century, when the ascending influence of the central government after the Civil War allowed travellers to wander the roads of Britain more safely than in previous times.

The condition of the map is very good for its age, having been framed and glazed.
