Product Description

A fantastic first edition John Pine engraving after the Robert Adams originals, covering the Invasion and Battles of the Spanish Armada 1588.

John Pine reproduced these plates, originally sculpted Augustine Ryther, to accompany the publication of his book in 1739, "The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords: Representing the the several Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the memorable year MDLXXXVIII ... to which are added ... Ten Charts of the Sea-Coasts of England and a General One of England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland etc."

He published a second edition in 1753, but the plates remained unchanged other than the date.
The original tapestries, to which Pine's book and plates were relating, were destroyed in the fire at the House of Lords in 1834.

This Plate holds Chart 3 and Chart 4.

Chart 3, as described in Pine's book, depicts 'the first engagements of the English and Spanish Fleets: After which the English gave chase to the Spaniards who draw themselves up into a Roundel...' Chart 4 is described: 'De Valdez Galleon springs her foremast, and is taken by Sir Francis Drake...'

The plate is in very good condition, mounted, glazed and framed. It shows some spotting but other than its original centre fold there are no creases or tears. Comes with a 1963 copy of 'Map Collectors' Circle, No. 4: Adams' & Pine's Maps of the Spanish Armada' where a wealth of information on the history of these charts, and also printed copies of the full collection can be found.
