Product Description

A complete 1899 edition of 'Bacon's Popular Atlas of the British Isles' edited by G. W. Bacon and published by G. W. Bacon & Co Ltd , London, in very good condition.

The atlas is complete, with all maps, index pages, and ancillary pages present. Revised according to latest ordnance survey, the atlas starts with flags and diagrams of trade before the 68 double page maps & plans, scaled and set in 5 mile squares. The maps are all in excellent condition showing no foxing to the paper and only the Key Map of Scotland has been annotated by a previous owner. After the maps the atlas ends with historical introductions, letterpress descriptions, gazetteer, and census tables before a comprehensive Index of Towns in all regions of the British Isles.

The hardback atlas has a decorative cloth covering that is still primarily intact with only some wear to the corners. The spine is still bound. The front cover has gilt titles in an impressed black ink decoration and shows some water spots. The top corner has bled some red ink to the first few pages, but only on the edge. The only wear of note inside are a few small tears to the dividers on the first 6 pages, where the heavy paper has not been sufficiently supported while opening the page. These have been reinforced behind with a white sticker.

Examples of this atlas in such condition are becoming rare to find with maps being removed and deterioration of the cover.
