Product Description

A very attractive hand coloured map of the Gulf of Mexico by Thomas Kitchin, which has been mounted, framed and glazed.

The full title is ‘MAP OF THE GULF OF MEXICO, THE ISLANDS AND COUNTRIES ADJACENT’. The map shows the southern coastline of the United States, Mexico, Central and the Norther tip of South America, with all the islands within the Caribbean and surrounding areas. The map dates from about 1777, although it was published in London in 1795. It was produced for the Rev. Dr. Robertson's History of America. Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784) worked as a publisher and engraver in London. He produced a large number of maps of every kind for periodicals such as the 'London Magazine' and for books on history and antiquities. He is probably best known though, for his partnership with Emanuel Bowen, with whom he published, in 1755 'The Large English Atlas' which contained the finest county maps of the 18th century.
