A fine trio of Victorian etchings of both the outside and inside of Kingswood School, near Bristol.
The etchings are from drawings by a Victorian artist called Edward Burrow. The pictures show the imposing exterior view of the school and the Main Hall, inside. They are signed and dated 1898. The etchings have been nicely mounted, framed and glazed. The top of both of the wooden frames has a metal and enamel shield representing the coat of arms of Kingswood School. Condition is good on the 2 with crests and reasonable on the third.
The 2 pictures were published by W. H. Beynon & Co., that was active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Based in Cheltenham, the firm was best known for publishing folios of prints based on specific schools, colleges and universities.
Little is known about Edward Burrow (1870-?). Born in Wellington, he was an artist, publisher and topographical etcher, specialising in schools and colleges for Benyon of Cheltenham.
Kingswood School was founded by John Wesley in 1748 in Kingswood (then known as King's Wood) near Bristol and was established for the children of local colliers and the sons of the itinerant clergy ministers of the Methodist Church. In 1995, Kingswood Prep School was created and currently has 300 pupils.
