Product Description

A very fine bust of the Duke of Wellington in Parian porcelain, by Joseph Pitts.

The bust was produced in 1852, to commemorate the death of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and hero of the Napoleonic Wars. It shows the head and shoulders of the aged Duke in fine detail. He is wearing his traditional cloak and the award of the Golden Fleece can partly be seen under his shoulder sash.

This is one of the better quality examples, which were available for purchase by various companies such as Minton, etc. Pitts gives excellent attention to the hair and the eyes have pupils, which gives it a far more life-like feel, than the Romanesque versions with blank eyes. The bust stands on an integral circular base. On the back is marked JOSH. PITTS . SC LONDON 1852. On the inside of the base is EE. Condition is extremely good.
