Product Description

A large and very decorative Portuguese majolica decorated ceramic wall hanging dish, in the shape of a Spiny Lobster or Crawfish (Palinurus).

The naturalistic lobster is resting on the dish with a garnish of mussels, barnacles and seaweed. The colours are typical of the Palissy style with a cherry red for the lobster and a mixture of cream, greens and browns for the rest. The underside is a creamy white lightly glazed clay, with the c1880 impressed marks for Alvaro Jose of Caldas da Rainha. There are 4 holes on the base rim for hanging by a wire. Condition is extremely good, without any evidence of damage. Very collectable item and hard to find in this condition.

Caldas da Rainha has a tradition of pottery that dates from the last quarter of the 15th century, shortly after its hospice hospital was built. Its patronage by the court and nobility, especially during plague outbreaks in Lisbon, attracted to the region many artisans and potters. Later in the 19th century there emerged a ceramics type which is mostly only decorative in purpose. The production was made by small artisanal cottage industry, with few potters.
