Product Description

A beautiful finely engraved, shaped and polished piece of Chinese Ming Dynasty russet, cream and green jade, that has been fashioned into the shape of a recumbent lion (with dog features), lying next to a small foal.

On the back of the lion is a stapped box. The quality of the workmanship is very good, taking into account that 400 - 500 years ago, there weren't any tools hard enough to work jade other than quartz crystal and sand. Rubbing down and shaping a stone could take years. The engraving tends to be quite shallow and understated, as opposed to later works. The carving rests upon an elegant, but much later wooden base, shaped in the outline form of the stone.

The lion has a rich history in Chinese mythology, often being the protector. As lions were not present in the majority of the Chinese Empire, the form taken in sculptures can be quite stylised. Hence that the Foo lions are often confused as dogs. The significance of the lion and the foal is not known.

Condition of both the jade carving and the wooden base is extremely good, without any damage.

Size jade: 12 x 5 x 5 cm (4 3/4 x 2 x 2 inches)
