Product Description

A very finely made antique Chinese medium sized eggshell porcelain bowl decorated in the Wucai style, with the 6 character Ming Chenghua mark on the base.

The piece is most likely Kangxi or Yongzheng in period (1662 – 1735), but imitating the Ming Dynasty ‘golden age’ of Chenghua. The porcelain is so fine and thin that it readily shows light through it and is decorated with the early palette and in a very loose impressionistic style. Condition is very good with just a couple of small chips to the rim of the base. Prior to us having it, the piece was purchased at a North Yorkshire auction in the 1950s.

The Chenghua Emperor (1447 – 1487), was the ninth Emperor of the Ming dynasty in China, between 1464 and 1487. His era name "Chenghua" means "accomplished change". The porcelain stone and glaze used for Chenghua imperial porcelains from the Jingdezhen kilns are arguably the finest ever achieved. The sensual pleasure of the touch of a Chenghua porcelain vessel is unmatched by porcelains of any other period, as the smooth, pleasing surface texture is unrivalled in its tactility.
