Product Description

A very nice looking Qing Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Tea Caddy in good condition from the late 19th century.

The tea caddy is brick shaped and each side is decorated with a meandros border, within which are pictures of flowers. The top has an unglazed raised neck over which fits a pewter lid. The lid has an inner lid that would have house a cork stopper. On the base is a symbol signature that slightly resembles a rat. There is also a red wax seal that has been applied by the Chinese authorities, to allow its export. The seal or ‘Jian Ding’ is issued by the Cultural Relics Bureau and varies from area to area. This particular one is the export approval seal mark from Tianjin.

According to Chinese law:

Anything made before 1949 is considered a ‘cultural relic and cannot be taken out of the country without a government seal and/or an officially shopped receipt. Nothing can be legally purchased from any government antique shop that dates from Qianlong's reign or before (i.e. before 1795).
