Product Description

A fine quality Neolithic Chinese carved Jade Cong in very good condition.

The Cong is a bizarre device and its use is not really understood. It seems to be an object of reverence and had religious or social significance. Numbers have been found in tombs of important people often placed on or around the body It was produced during the Lianzhu period and dates between 3300 to 2200 B.C. (4000 to 5000 years ago). It looks somewhat like a heavy bracelet, with a modern geometric shape. However, the inner ring is too small to fit a hand through.

This example is carved in brown russet jade and is quite short. It does not have any engraving or characters. Other examples are quite tall and tower shaped and sometimes have faces. These pieces don't appear to have been copied in the later dynasties (unlike earthenware and porcelain), therefore aiding the dating of the Cong.
