Product Description

A rare antique Ming Dynasty Chinese Bixi seal in the shape of a stylised turtle shelled dragon.

It is made of brown jade, but it has lost its polished finish, through mineralisation with age. It is very hard and does not scratch with a steel point. The tortoise is lying on a square slab. On the underside are four Chinese characters, that are archaic in form, but not Zhuanshu. This helps date it around the Ming Dynasty.

The script reads T’ien Shu Government Official. T’ien Shu (1457 – 1464) was a lesser known emperor, with a very short reign. The seal has a few small restorations to one corner, but these are done in white plaster and are clearly seen (possibly museum piece). The seal stands on a modern wooden stand for show.
