Product Description

A beautifully made circular cloisonné ‘kogo’ incense box, made during the Japanese Golden Age of Enamelling (1880-1915).

On a background of glittery copper-coloured enamel, flaming pearls of various sizes can be seen. The pearls, which are believed to grant wishes, consist of silver wire compartments holding enamels of green, yellow, white, magnolia and grey. The interior of the box is coated with oxblood counter enamel, and bears an interesting old label.

The shimmering orange has been offset with a beaded border of translucent mirror black enamel, in a manner that is reminiscent of works from the workshop of Namikawa Yasuyuki. Though seldom appearing on the open market, a selection of Namikawa’s circular boxes can be seen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The condition of the box is excellent, with only a few insignificant stress cracks to the counter enamel.
