Product Description

An exceptionally fine Japanese cloisonné vase, dating from the middle of the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

On a fine quality sky blue enamel background, the vase is decorated with peony flowers and dense foliage. In the middle two sparrows are perched on a branch. The quality of enamelling on the sparrows is incredible, with the feathering made up of mixed enamels and submerged wires. On the other side 3 sparrows are in flight. The top and bottom of the vase is decorated with tight geometric borders. An unusual band of orange goldstone breaks up the border at the top of the vase.

The enamel is unusually thick, as are the ‘shakudo’ metal fittings.

The condition of the vase is exceptional, with only a small firing flaw to the blue counter enamel on the inside of the lip.

Size: 15.5 x 12cm (6 x 4¾”)
