Product Description

An unusual Japanese cloisonné enamel plate, made during the late Meiji Period (1868-1912).

On a pink background, the plate depicts an eagle flying above a three-toe dragon. The dragon’s scales are well observed, as is the feathering to the eagle, which consists of numerous shades of grey, held without wires. A similar use of wireless enamel can be seen on the beak, where the yellow has been dappled with dark grey.

The condition of the plate is very good, though there are a few firing bubbles to the pink background. Such flaws were an inevitable consequence of a process in its infancy. The capacity to anchor enamel to a vessel, without the need of continuous background wires, only became possible around 1890. There is a minor loss to the blue counter enamel on the reverse of the plate.
