Product Description

A fascinating piece of Japanese Satsuma pottery, made by Kozan during the latter half of the 19th Century.

The vase is of cylindrical form, sitting atop three pedestal feet. Protruding just above the feet is a rim decorated with elevated gold and silver paint. Crosshatching and geometric patterns adorn the top and bottom of the pot; between a large selection of sea life: octopus, eels, lobster, crabs, clams, scallops, squid, red snappers, gurnard, albacore, skate, ribbon fish, whelks and oysters. Aside from the astonishing quality of painting, a few ingenious features aid the interest of the vase: the crackle effect toned with faint blue paint, gives the appearance and texture of water. Minute gold dotting on the background of the vase captures the light, giving a vivid and brilliant appearance. The painting also works with the curve of the vase, adding to the illusion of swimming fish.

The bottom of the vase is signed大日本 Dai Nippon (Greater Japan) and 光山造 Kozan zo (Made by Kozan).

The condition of the vase is good, though the gold paint on the borders has worn with time. Additionally a hairline crack runs a couple of centimetres down from the top rim.
