Product Description

An unusual Japanese cloisonné enamel vase, made in the early decades of the twentieth century.

Using both ‘shosen’ and ‘musen’ enamels, the vase shows a snow-capped Mount Fuji in the clouds, with one of the five lakes at its base. A pair of stylised boats sail in the distance, whilst a selection of skiffs moor at the bank in the foreground.

The wireless enamelling is particularly well observed, with the delicate blue striations in the water conveying movement.

In many ways, the vase is reminiscent of the works of Namikawa Sosuke, whose subtle artistry distinguishes him from the many enamellists who preferred profuse wirework.

The condition of the vase is good; the kiln bruises are the unfortunate but inevitable consequence of a craft in its infancy, before innovations allowed for a more stable background enamel. There is a missing section of enamel to the rim of the vase.
