Product Description

An exquisite pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases, made during the Golden Age of Japanese enamelling (1880-1910).

Decorated with a combination of silver and gilt wires, the vases portray a profusion of stylised birds, insects and foliage. The main shields alternate between phoenixes and dragons. The pattern can be interpreted as the logical and sophisticated conclusion of the Kyoto School, whose traditional geometric patterns contrast with the floral arrangements of Nagoya and the understated asymmetry of Namikawa Sosuke.

The vases bear the impressed ‘koro’ seal of ‘Ota’. There is some uncertainty as to which ‘Ota’ this might be. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London believe it is ‘Ota Jinnoei’; whilst Frederic T. Schneider, in his exhaustive study of the subject, records it as ‘Ota Toshiro.’

The condition of the pair is exceptional with no damage at all to the enamel. The wires are also untarnished and the enamels are beautifully clear.
