Product Description

A beautiful ornately decorated early 19th Century Indian silver damascened (Bridiware) spill vase.

The vase has the geometric patterns, typical of the Islamic influence of the Mughals, but is decorated with a pair of fish, most likely Gaurmatsya Goldfish. The fish symbolise auspiciousness and are linked in Hindu religion with the sacred rivers of the Ganges and Yamuna (the goldfish are also Buddhist symbols).

Condition is very good, but the pewter solder on the base displays a small crack.

The traditional art of damascening in silver or Koftgari work, as Bidriware is popularly known, entails encrusting one field, namely silver or gold on to another metal. It originally started in Persia, but was brought to India under the Mughals. The dark metal achieved in Bridriware, was the result of zinc and copper alloys, with other chemical compounds that produces a new black alloy, which is brittle, but does not rust or corrode and has the additional advantage of allowing a better polish. Each bidri utensil has to pass through a long complicated process of casting, polishing, engraving, inlaying and blackening.
