Product Description

A very finely made terracotta spill bottle that we believe comes from an Ancient Egyptian tomb.

We are estimating it to date from the Ptolemaic period, but it may be much earlier (similar water bottles were found in Tutankhamun’s tomb). The terracotta bottle has been made on a potter’s wheel (inner rings are visible), but the walls of the container are only less than 2 mm thick. This obviously makes it very impractical to use as it will shatter very easily, but would make it a fine offering to a dead king or nobleman.

The piece was found in pieces and has been reconstructed and although the bottle retains its shape, it has several pieces missing, which allow the viewing of the inside. There appears to have been some reference markings on the base, but these have been erased. The clay has been decorated with very light incised decoration to the neck and upper part.
