Product Description

A very nice late 19th century Measham Bargeware Pottery Large Teapot and Jug, which were presented to Mr & Mrs Heyluer, of Street, Somerset and are dated 1893.

Both items are matched, being finished in a brown treacle glaze with raised highlights decorated in white with blue, green and pink details. The recipient’s details, probably as a wedding present, have been stamped in blue on a white banner. The lid of the teapot has a large finial in the shape of another teapot. Condition is extremely good. A check on the Ancestry website mentions a Thomas (born 1871) and Sarah Heyluer and twins Elsie May and Ethel Annie born 1896 as the possible family.

19th century Measham 'Bargeware' pottery was made chiefly in the Burton-on-Trent area and was especially favoured by bargee's wives. A known maker of these usually unmarked wares was William Mason of the Pool Pottery, Church Greasley, which is near to Measham. It became known as Measham pottery because it was extensively marketed through a shop on Measham High Street owned by a Mrs Ann Bonas and being close to the canal bridge was favoured by passing bargees who were able order a piece and collect the personalised gift on their return journey. Whilst obviously having a practical use as teapots, beakers and jars, they were often used as presentation pieces for births, anniversaries and especially marriages.
