c1680 Jacobean Devon Red Earthenware Pottery Ewer

A very nice example of a mid to late 17th century large glazed Devon red earthenware pottery Ewer in remarkably good condition.
The Ewer or jug has the typical Devon country style with the bulbous body, short handle and small spout. It has an orange glaze only on the inside. An interesting addition is that one of the pebbles that was used to lift the ewer when firing has fallen inside the ewer and been glazed over. The base is flat and displays a fair amount of rubbing from the prolonged use. The top lip has a bit of frittering and chips from age and because of the softness of the earthenware. The only decoration is a couple of ridges to the handle. There are no cracks or repairs.
