Product Description

A very fine and beautifully decorated pair of very early 19th century shallow oval serving dishes by Josiah Spode.

The dishes have been decorated in a Chinese/Japanese Kakiemon style, with hand painted rust red, blue, green and gold decoration on white hard paste early bone china. The detail of the design is superb, with lots of very fine flowers and concentric circles. On the underside, there is only the handwritten SPODE in red. This is indicative of early pieces and appears on pieces 1780 to 1820. The company traded under that name from around 1770 to 1833.

According to the Spode Museum these cups are the "the remains of what one assumes was a bone china tea, coffee, breakfast, dessert and dinner service possibly originally ordered by Edmund, nephew of Edmund Pollexfen Bastard of Kitley House, Yealmpton, South Devon and who succeeded him in 1812"

Condition is very good, with some minor wear to the gold edge. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the bone china A very desirable pair of dishes, which the Spode Museum have asked for photos of, for their archives.
