Product Description

A stunningly beautiful pair of tall ornate late 19th Century French bronze two-handled amphora vases decorated in relief with dancing nymphes and scrolls with griffin handles, resting on brass mounted slate stepped bases and in the style of Ferdinand Barbedienne.

The vases are purely decorative as they are not hollow, so are heavy. The c1880 bronze has a golden patina, but has not been gilded. It is decorated with floral garlands, reeding and striations. The composite fluted and foliate slate platform stands with locking frames, raised on stylised lions paw feet. The whole effect is very Neo-Hellenistic. The condition is remarkably good, without any damage to the bronze and just a small knock to the slate stone. The pieces are not signed, but definitely appear similar to the quality work of the French metalworker and manufacturer Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 – 1892), who became known for his bronze reproductions of classical pieces of art.
