Product Description

A beautiful looking mid Victorian rolled Gold and black enamel mourning brooch with a braided hair panel.

The brooch centre contains braided ash blonde hair, and is surrounded by a small scrolled gold frame, within black enamelling and a Rococo style scrolled gold frame. On the perfect condition black enamelling is written in gold Gothic letters: In Memory Of. The good size brooch is in a very good condition on the front, but the back reveals some distortion due to knocks of the thin panel. It has a metal pin suspension with a 'C' catch, that hides the damage from view when worn. There is also a small loop to the top reverse for a safety chain or fine necklace chain

The Godey's Ladies magazine - the Vogue of the 1800's featured this quote in 1863: "Hair is at once the most delicate and last of our materials and survives us like love. It is so light, so gentle, so escaping from the idea of death, that, with a lock of hair belonging to a child or friend we may almost look up to heaven and compare notes with angelic nature, may almost say, I have a piece of thee here, not unworthy of thy being now."
