Product Description

A large commesso cameo ‘Ecce Homo’ brooch, dating from the second half of the 19th century.

Commesso or ‘polychromatic cameo’, refers to a technique that originated in Northern Italy during the 16th century, where a carved cameo would be finished with hardstone or enamel inlay.

The brooch depicts Jesus Christ of Nazareth, wearing a malachite and carnelian robe and holding a sceptre of abalone. His crown of thorns appears to have been made of copper or bronze. The inscription of the renowned carver ‘Lamont’ can be read on the reverse of the brooch.

The brooch comes with a late Victorian box, for the outfitters “Lellmann & schomburgk | Jewellers and Goldsmiths | Rundle Street.” Born in Germany, the jeweller’s Edward Emil Lellmann and Ludwig Julius Schomburg emigrated to South Australia and founded a successful partnership in Adelaide.

The condition of the brooch is generally very good, though small sections of the crown of thorns have damaged over time.
