Product Description

A beautiful antique Victorian 18 carat yellow gold and onyx with pearls Mourning locket.

The substantial locket front is made of black onyx, with a central starburst in gold and mounted with 11 pearls of varying sizes. The back and body of the locket is in 18 carat (750) yellow gold, which isn’t hallmarked but has been tested by a professional jeweller. The suspension ring is also made on onyx and gold. On the back of the locket is an engraved inscription: ‘Arnold – DIED – October 13th 1873 – Aged 22 years’. Condition is very good, but there is a small (stabilised) hairline crack to the onyx.

We are not aware of who Arnold was, but the inside has 2 later photographs of members of the Bastard family, namely Lieutenant John Rodney P. Bastard (186887) (1921 – 1982) Grenadier Guards WWII He served in ‘J’ Service and 2 GHQ Liaison Regiment, finishing the War at Regimental Headquarters and his mother Lilias Mason Wellesley (ne Summers).
