c1870 Victorian Ornate 15 Carat Gold Necklace Chain

A stunningly beautiful, very ornate and intricately decorated Victorian period gold necklace chain in very good condition.

The chain is made of around 15 to 17 carat gold (625 – 708 purity) and is not hallmarked, as was normal then, until it was enforced from the 1900s. Nor does it have any maker’s stamp. It has been, however, tested and reacts to 18ct, but not 14ct.

The only discernible markings are on the ring of the unusual screw tightening clasp. It reads PAT. DEC. 3. 67. (Patented 3rd December 1867). This is surprising, as a near identical clasp fitting appears on 1813 period gold medals of the Napoleonic period.
