Product Description

A rare and very collectable mid to late 19th century Naga People Bronze and Beaded Warrior’s necklace.

The necklace is made of 10 cast bronze curved pendants, decorated with a design similar to a sheep shank. The curved pendants have eyelets at each end and have been mounted on plaited cord with yellow and red glass tubular beads. The look is quite rough and ready, typical of the jewellery made and used by the Naga.

The Naga are a conglomeration of several tribes inhabiting the North Eastern part of India and north-western Burma (Myanmar). The tribes have similar cultures and traditions and form the majority ethnic group in the Indian state of Nagaland, with significant presence in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and some small population in Assam. However, they are best known for their practice of headhunting and preserving the heads of enemies as trophies. Given their geographical isolation, the Naga made all the goods they used and had little interaction with the rest of the World. As such, the cult of headhunting continued well into the 20th century. It was seen as a symbol of courage. Naga headhunting included mortification of the rival, ritual violence, cosmological balance, the display of manhood, cannibalism, prestige, and as a means of securing the services of the victim as a slave in the afterlife.
